Logs are towed downriver. This log is being tied to the log boom to begin its trip through the mill.

As the logs enter the mill, they are cross-cut into huge pieces. Note the size of the blade!
After the crosscut this splitter splits it into manageable sized pieces.

After the shake is split from the block, it is sawn one side only for handsplit shakes, two sides for a tapersawn.
